Turkish TV Series Filming Locations in Istanbul — From the Magnificent Century to The Golden Boy
Where were your favorite Turkish series filmed? A location-by-location guide from Sultanahmet to the Bosphorus — with walking distances from Hotel Perula.

When the Screen Meets Reality
Turkish TV series — dizis — have become a global phenomenon. From the historical drama of Muhteşem Yüzyıl (The Magnificent Century) to the romantic intensity of Kara Sevda (Endless Love) and the family saga of Yalı Çapkını (The Golden Boy), these shows have captivated audiences across Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and beyond.
What makes them visually stunning isn't just production quality — it's Istanbul itself. The palaces, mosques, waterfront mansions, and narrow streets you see in the background aren't sets. They're real places, and you can visit them.
This guide maps out the most important filming locations of the most popular Turkish series, organized by how to actually get there. The best part: the Magnificent Century locations are all walking distance from Hotel Perula.
The Magnificent Century (Muhteşem Yüzyıl) — Walk It in Half a Day
The Magnificent Century is arguably the most internationally recognized Turkish series — the story of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and Hürrem Sultan (Roxelana) drew hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. While interior scenes were filmed in purpose-built studios, the real historical locations are all in Sultanahmet, minutes from our door.
Topkapi Palace — 8 min walk
Topkapi Palace is the series' central location: this is where Suleiman ruled, where the harem intrigues played out, and where the throne room scenes were set. In reality, Topkapi served as the Ottoman Empire's seat of power for over 400 years.
The Harem section is essential for fans. In the series, the harem was the heart of the drama — Hürrem, Mahidevran, and Ibrahim Pasha's power struggles all took place here. The real harem is stunning: İznik tiles, painted ceilings, and narrow corridors that create exactly the atmosphere you saw on screen. The Harem requires a separate ticket — get both.
The Throne Room (Arz Odası) is where Suleiman received his grand viziers and foreign ambassadors. The series depicted this space faithfully, though the real room is smaller than the studio version.
The Fourth Courtyard terrace overlooks the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn — the same view Suleiman would have seen every morning. This is one of the best photo spots in all of Istanbul.
The palace is closed on Tuesdays. For Magnificent Century fans, allow at least 3 hours — with the Harem, half a day.
Hagia Sophia — 3 min walk
Hagia Sophia appears throughout the series as one of the empire's most important religious buildings. Sultan Suleiman prayed here, and the building's dome features frequently in cityscape scenes.
It's 250 meters from Hotel Perula. Since 2020, it operates as a mosque with free entry. Beat the queues by arriving at 9 AM or after 4 PM.
Hürrem Sultan Hammam — 3 min walk
This location has special significance for fans: the Hürrem Sultan Hammam was built by Mimar Sinan in 1556, commissioned by Sultan Suleiman in memory of Hürrem Sultan. It stands right next to Hagia Sophia.
Today it operates as a luxury spa — suitable for couples, with a stunning interior. It's the most expensive hammam in Istanbul, but if you're looking for the authentic Magnificent Century connection, this is the place. Read our complete hammam guide to know what to expect.
Süleymaniye Mosque — 10 min by tram
The Süleymaniye Mosque is another iconic building from the series. Designed by Mimar Sinan and commissioned by Sultan Suleiman between 1550–1557, the mosque's construction was a major storyline in the show.
Take the T1 tram to Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı stop, then walk 5 minutes uphill. Entry is free, and the mosque is less crowded than the Blue Mosque or Hagia Sophia.
The courtyard offers an exceptional view over the Golden Horn. In the mosque gardens, you'll find the tombs of both Suleiman and Hürrem Sultan — both free to visit. For fans of the series, this is where the story comes closest to reality.
Ibrahim Pasha Palace — 2 min walk
Ibrahim Pasha's palace stands on the western side of the Hippodrome, 2 minutes from our hotel. Ibrahim was Suleiman's closest friend and grand vizier — his tragic arc is one of the series' most powerful storylines.
Today the palace houses the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. The courtyard and building structure survive from the Ottoman period. Less crowded than Topkapi and, in the context of the series, particularly interesting.
Walking Itinerary
All the Magnificent Century locations fit into a single half-day walk from Hotel Perula:
Morning: Topkapi Palace + Harem (3 hours) Midday: Hagia Sophia + Hürrem Sultan Hammam (1.5 hours) Afternoon: Süleymaniye Mosque + Suleiman and Hürrem's tombs (1.5 hours) Return: Walk back through the Grand Bazaar to the hotel (30 min)
Total distance: approximately 6–7 kilometers — comfortable for a full day.
Bosphorus Series — A Day Trip
Beyond the Magnificent Century, most popular Turkish series are filmed along the Bosphorus — in waterfront mansions (yalıs), upscale neighborhoods, and ferry terminals. These can be combined into a single Bosphorus day trip.
The Golden Boy (Yalı Çapkını) — Beylerbeyi, Asian Side
The Golden Boy is one of the highest-rated Turkish series internationally. The Korhan family's magnificent Bosphorus mansion is the show's visual centerpiece.
The main filming location is the Sakıp Sabancı Yalısı in Beylerbeyi on the Asian side. Its distinctive white facade and gardens feature in numerous scenes. You can view the exterior from the Beylerbeyi waterfront, or see it from the water during a Bosphorus cruise.
Reach Beylerbeyi by ferry from Eminönü (15 min walk from us) to Üsküdar, then bus or walk to Beylerbeyi. About 40 minutes total.
Endless Love (Kara Sevda) — Across the City
Kara Sevda used nearly every iconic corner of Istanbul. Key locations include:
Galata Tower — featured in several romantic scenes. A 15-minute walk from us to the Galata Bridge, then 10 minutes uphill. The viewing terrace offers a 360-degree panorama.
Kuzguncuk — Kemal's family neighborhood on the Asian side. A charming area of colorful wooden houses that's worth a half-day visit on its own. Ferry to Üsküdar, then bus or walk.
Rumelihisarı (Rumeli Fortress) — the Bosphorus fortress features in multiple scenes. Built by Sultan Mehmed II in 1452, it connects to the Ottoman era depicted in the Magnificent Century. Reachable by bus from Kabataş (15 min by tram from us).
İstinye–Yeniköy — Nihan's family home on the European Bosphorus shore. The villa is on private property but you can explore the neighborhood and waterfront.
Daydreamer (Erkenci Kuş) — Beykoz and Maiden's Tower
Erkenci Kuş fans will want to visit Kanlıca in Beykoz, where Can's childhood home was filmed. Kanlıca is also famous for its yogurt — try the Kanlıca yoğurdu at the waterfront.
Kız Kulesi (Maiden's Tower) — the small tower standing in the middle of the Bosphorus was used for romantic scenes. Recently restored and open to visitors by boat from Üsküdar or Kabataş.
Forbidden Fruit (Yasak Elma) — Yeniköy Mansions
Yasak Elma's upper-class world was filmed in luxury mansions along the Bosphorus in the Yeniköy district. These mansions aren't publicly accessible, but you can see them from the water during a Bosphorus cruise.
How to Combine Bosphorus Locations
The best approach is a Bosphorus cruise combined with waterfront walks.
Morning: Walk to Eminönü pier (15 min from us). Take the official Şehir Hatları Bosphorus cruise — the short tour (2 hours) goes to the second bridge and back. You'll pass the Yeniköy mansions (Forbidden Fruit, Endless Love), Rumelihisarı fortress, and the Beylerbeyi waterfront (Golden Boy). Sit on the right side of the boat for the best European shore views on the way out.
Afternoon: Disembark at Üsküdar or Beylerbeyi. Walk the waterfront to see the Sakıp Sabancı Yalısı, then continue to Kuzguncuk for the colorful houses and a tea break.
Evening: Ferry back to Eminönü, walk to the hotel, dinner on the terrace with Blue Mosque views.
This entire itinerary fits in one day and covers the most important Bosphorus filming locations.
Tips for Series Fans
Save screenshots on your phone. Compare scenes to reality at each location — these comparison photos make the best social media content.
Prioritize Topkapi and Hagia Sophia. If time is limited, these Magnificent Century locations are the most impressive, and they're walking distance from the hotel.
Book the Bosphorus cruise for the morning. Afternoon light works against photography on the water — the mansions look best in morning sun.
Ask us at reception. Our guests frequently ask about series filming locations, so we know exactly where everything is, how to get there, and which ferry to take.
Why Sultanahmet Is the Best Base
Most series fans focus on the Bosphorus mansions — understandably, since they're visually spectacular. But the Magnificent Century locations are all in Sultanahmet, walking distance from Hotel Perula. And the Bosphorus locations are easiest to reach from Sultanahmet too: the Eminönü ferry pier, where all Bosphorus cruises and ferries depart, is a 15-minute walk from us.
